a drug with the generic name ofloxacin. Floxin is an antibiotic
classified under the drugs called fluoroquinolones. It fights
bacteria in the body.
Floxin Indications
Floxin is indicated for the treatment of various bacterial infections
such as:
Bronchitis
Infections of the prostate
Pneumonia
Chlamydia
Gonorrhea
Skin infections
Urinary tract infections
Floxin may also be used for purposes other than those listed in
this medication guide.
Floxin Warnings
Floxin is
listed in the FDA pregnancy category C, which means that it is
not known whether, doses of Floxin more than the recommended daily
allowance will harm an unborn baby. Talk to your doctor if you
are pregnant before taking Floxin or any supplemental medicine.
Floxin passes
into breast milk. Patients breast-feeding an infant are advised
not to take Floxin without first telling your doctor.
Floxin is
not indicated for children younger than 12 years of age. Floxin
may interfere with bone development.
Before taking
Floxin, tell your doctor if yo experience any of the following:
Kidney diseases
Seizures
Epilepsy
You may not be able to take Floxin or you may need a special monitoring
or dosage adjustment during treatment.
Floxin Intake
Guidelines
Floxin must
be taken with a full glass of water. To prevent Floxin crystals
from forming in the urine, drink several extra glasses of fluid
each day.
Take Floxin
on an empty stomach 1hour before or 2 hours after meals.
Take Floxin
at evenly spaced intervals. Follow your doctor's instructions.
Do not take
antacids that contain magnesium or aluminum such as Tums or Rolaids,
the ulcer medicine Sucralfate such as Carafate, or vitamin or
mineral supplements that contain iron or zinc for a minimum of
2 hours before or 2 hours after a dose of Floxin. Doing such can
greatly decrease the effects of the antibiotic.
Take all of
the Floxin that has been prescribed for you even if you begin
to feel better. Your symptoms may start to improve before the
infection is completely treated.
Floxin Dosage
Floxin should
be taken exactly as directed by your doctor or as directed on
the package. Ask your pharmacist, nurse, or doctor to explain
them to you if you do not understand these directions.
Floxin Overdose
Seek immediate
medical attention.The most common symptom of Floxin overdose is
seizures.
Floxin Missed
Dose
Take the missed
dose up to 2 hours late. Skip it and take only the next regularly
scheduled dose of Floxin if more than 2 hours have passed since
the missed dose. A double dose of Floxin medication should not
be taken unless otherwise directed by your doctor.
Floxin Side
Effects
Stop taking
Floxin and seek immediate medical attention or contact your doctor
immediately if you experience any of the following serious side
effects:
Difficulty
in breathing
Closing of the throat
Swelling of the lips
Swelling of the tongue
Swelling of the face
Hives
Seizures
Confusion
Hallucinations
Liver damage
Yellowing of the skin or eyes
Nausea
Abdominal pain or discomfort
Unusual bleeding
Bruising
Severe fatigue
muscle or joint pain
Floxin Drug Reactions
Before taking Floxin, tell your doctor if you are taking any of
the following drugs:
Theophylline
Probenecid
Warfarin
Cimetidine
Cyclosporine
Glipizide
Glyburide
Ibuprofen
Naproxen
You may not be able to take Floxin, or you may require a dosage
adjustment or special monitoring during treatment if you are taking
any of the medicines listed above.
Drugs other
than those listed here may also interact with Floxin. Talk to
