Rabeprazole
is used for:
Treating duodenal
ulcers, gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD), erosive or ulcerative
GERD, and a condition where pancreatic tumors cause over-production
of gastric acid (Zollinger-Ellison Syndrome). It also may be used
with certain antibiotics to treat certain types of ulcers. It
may also be used to treat other conditions as determined by your
doctor.
Rabeprazole
is a proton pump inhibitor (PPI). It works by reducing gastric
acid secretion by blocking the final step of acid production by
the stomach lining.
Drug Uses
Aciphex decreases
the amount of acid produced in your stomach. Aciphex is used to
treat ulcers, gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD or heartburn),
and other conditions involving excessive stomach acid production.
How Taken
Aciphex is
available for oral administration as delayed-release, enteric-coated
tablets. The recommended adult oral dose is one Aciphex 20 mg
delayed-release tablet to be taken once daily for four to eight
weeks. Take each dose with a full glass of water. Do not break,
chew, or split the tablets. Swallow them whole. They are specially
formulated to release slowly in your body.
Warnings/Precautions
Before taking
Aciphex, tell your doctor if you are taking any of the following
medicine (Aciphex - Rabeprazole)s: ketoconazole (Nizoral), ampicillin
(Omnipen, Principen), iron (Feosol, Mol-Iron, Fergon, Femiron,
others), digoxin (Lanoxin, Lanoxicaps), or cyclosporine (Sandimmune,
Neoral). You may not be able to take Aciphex, or you may require
a dosage adjustment or special monitoring during your treatment
if you are taking any of the medicine (Aciphex - Rabeprazole)s
listed above. Drugs other than those listed here may also interact
with Aciphex. Talk to your doctor and pharmacist before taking
any prescription or over-the-counter medicine (Aciphex - Rabeprazole)s.
Aciphex Dosage
Gastroesophageal
Reflux Disease (GERD): The usual dose is 20 mg once a day for
4 to 8 weeks. For patients who have not healed after 8 weeks,
the doctor may prescribe an additional 8-week course of Aciphex
(Rabeprazole) therapy.
To Relieve Symptoms or Prevent a Relapse of GERD: The usual dose
is 20 mg once a day.
Duodenal Ulcer: The usual dose is 20 mg taken once daily after
the morning meal for a period of up to 4 weeks. Some people may
require an additional 4 weeks of treatment.
Combination Drug Treatment to Eliminate H. Pylori: The recommended
combination is 20 mg of AcipHex, 1,000 mg of amoxicillin, and
500 mg of clarithromycin taken twice a day for 7 days. It's important
to take all three drugs for the entire 7 days. Cutting the treatment
short could fail to eliminate the infection and possibly lead
to antibiotic resistance.
Zollinger-Ellison Syndrome: The usual starting dose is 60 mg once
a day, although your doctor may adjust the dose based on your
individual need. Doses of up to 100 mg once a day or 60 mg twice
a day are sometimes prescribed.
Missed Dose
If you miss
a dose, use it as soon as you remember. If it is near the time
of the next dose, skip the missed dose and resume your usual dosing
schedule. Do not "double-up" the dose to catch up.

your doctor if you experience headache; upset stomach or diarrhea;
insomnia or nervousness; or a rash or itching. Side effects other
than those listed here may also occur. Talk to your doctor about
any side effect that seems unusual or that is especially bothersome.
